New 2012 Ford Focus SFE officially certified for 40 mpg on the highway

With oil prices on a skyrocket to the moon, Ford today announced that the 2012 Ford Focus SFE was officially certified by the EPA for 40 mpg on the highway.

That’s the good news.

But there’s a catch. Only the 2012 Ford Focus SFE package is good for the 40 mpg. SFE stands for the (super fuel economy) package which means that buyers will have to opt for the six-speed automatic transmission as well as unique 16-inch steel wheels that come with aero-enhanced wheel covers and of course high-efficiency tires.

“Our customers tell us that fuel economy is the top reason for purchasing a Focus,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “The all-new Focus meets that demand with great fuel economy, class-leading technologies and features, exceptional standards of craftsmanship and driving dynamics typically reserved for larger, more expensive vehicles.”

And in case you are wondering, the 2012 Ford Focus SFE is rated by the EPA for 28 mpg in the city.

The new Ford Focus joins an exclusive club of cars that manage the 40 mpg and that compete against it that only include the 2011 Hyundai Elantra and 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco.
