Will there be a 2014 Dodge Journey SRT6?

Will the Dodge Journey SRT6 be produced? God – I hope so.

The Dodge Journey has rumbled in, out and through obscurity since its 2008 introduction. What was a simple translation of the good old station-wagon has become a fairly tight package. It’s a  good family car that’s utilitarian, affordable and may get a bit of an upgrade in the near future. Chrysler Group LLC and SRT may produce the Dodge Journey SRT6 as early as next year (as a 2014 model).

No, I’m not talking about an appearance package with nice rims – I’m talking about a big-honkin’ does of power too!

The 2012 Dodge Journey

The Dodge Journey R/T already has a beefy power plant in the 283 horsepower, Pentastar V6. So, what do you think SRT will do with the already peppy V6? I tried to ask Ralph Gilles, SEO of SRT, while I was at the Chicago Auto Show, but a bunch of journalists asking questions about the Viper.

Here’s what the scuttlebutt is on the Dodge Journey SRT6:

  • It may be turbocharged or supercharged. The target may be toppling the Ford Explorer Sport which makes 365 hp. The Dodge Journey SRT6 should be lighter than the Explorer Sport and, if equipped with the Journey R/T’s stiffer sport suspension, it should hold its own against the larger Explorer.
  • Logic dictates that the all-wheel drive (AWD) system would be derived from the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT in some way. I’m sure the AWD would be standard as would the six-speed automatic. Although, wouldn’t it be Ãœber-cool to have a six-speed manual!? I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you. There is a chance that the eight-speed auto could make an appearance too.
  • The Dodge Journey SRT6 should undercut the Explorer Sport’s $40,780 base price too.

The rumor-mill is full of disheartening predictions of the Dodge Durango’s demise; and, if that’s the case, the Journey may be the only vehicle in Chrysler Group LLC’s fleet that has the potential to be a kick-ass, seven-passenger ride.

As I have rugrats and having a crazy-fast people mover is rather appealing, I will be keeping an eye on this story.

Have any of you heard anything?

Let us know!

Here’s a fun video with the EXTREMELY fast Ford Explorer Sport!

There aren’t too many “fun” seven-passenger family movers out there. I hope the Dodge Journey SRT6 gets the green light.
