First Look: 2014 BMW 4-Series Coupe

BMW 4-Series Coupe Front

It was shown as a concept car at the Detroit Auto Show, but now we’ve got your first look at the 2014 BMW 4-Series Coupe in its production form. The car’s official debut will happen at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September and it’s expected to appear in dealer showrooms later this year.

The 2014 BMW 4-Series Coupe is based on the same platform as the 3-series coupe it replaces. There’s a noticeably lower and wider look but it still clearly borrows from the 3-series, especially the headlamp positioning against the front grille.

The car is slightly larger that the 3-series coupe, gaining 2″ in width and about 1″ in length. It’s also got a 2″ greater wheelbase along with a rear track increased by 3″ and a front track increased by 2″, all of which help with it’s more aggressive stance.

In the US, the car will launch with four and six-cylinder inline engines, including two turbocharged options in either a 2-liter four-cylinder gas engine that produces 242 hp or a 3.0-liter six-cylinder with 302 hp.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard with an 8-speed automatic with paddle-shifters as an option. Also standard is rear-wheel drive with an option for all-wheel on the 428i and 435i models.

Inside, the 2014 BMW 4-Series Coupe looks a lot like the 3-series with the same instrument cluster and center console. Changes include a steeper front windshield as well as more contoured, lower front seats to lend the car a much sportier feel.

The suspension has also been lowered to reduce the vehicle’s center of gravity and roll center, both of which will enhance the sportier look and feel of the 2014 BMW 4-Series. No word yet on pricing which will likely come closer to the car’s introduction.
