LA Auto Show: 2014 Honda Civic – How to Improve the Best Seller?

Honda Civic is locked in a tight sales battle against the Toyota Corolla for compact sedan supremacy, and for the moment the Civic has the upper hand.  Honda makes updates to the 2014 Honda Civic Coupe and Sedan in hopes to maintain its leadership position.

The 2014 model gets subtle exterior updates.  The lower front grill is more pronounced and the upper grill is further integrated with the headlights.  You would have to put the new 2014 Civic side-by-side with the 2013 model to really see the differences.  All 2014 interiors are upgraded for Coupes and Sedans.  This includes the new 7-inch touch center infotainment screen.

While the natural gas and Hybrid powertrains remain the same, the gasoline powered cars get improved performance and efficiency.  There is an updated CVT that allows for quicker response and higher MPGs : 30 city / 42 highway, and 33 combined.  Base Coupe gets a new exhaust system for +3 horsepower to 143 hp and +1 lb-ft for 129 lb-ft of torque.    The Si Coupe gets an a tighter upgraded suspension and a new exhaust system for +4 horsepower for a total of 205 hp, and +4 lb-ft for a total of 174 lb-ft of torque.  The 2014 Honda Civic sedan HF with a CVT gets a class leading 35 MPG combined.

The upgrades also include higher end features, such as: blind spot display, keyless entry, and push button start.  In the end, the refreshed 2014 Honda Civic take a successful formula and make small and careful adjustments to keep it ahead of the pack.
