Mary Barra, 51, becomes the first female CEO at a global automaker.   Her current title is: Executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain.  She was chosen by the GM Board to be the next CEO of the company, as Dan Akerson steps down effective Jan 15, 2014.

Mary has been with the company since she was 18 and has risen to the top through manufacturing, engineering, and senior staff positions.  GM says: “She is a leader in the company’s ongoing turnaround, revitalizing GM’s product development process resulting in the launch of critically acclaimed new products while delivering record product quality ratings and higher customer satisfaction.”

The 2014 Corvette and 2014 Silverado are some of the examples where Mary Barra had a hand in bringing to market with improved interiors and mechanical components.
