Photo of the Day: What in Tarnation is a Subagon and why is it so Cool?!

A Subagon is a cross between a VW Vanagon and a Subaru. More to the point: it’s a Volkswagen Vanagon (Bully, T3, Caravelle, Microbus etc.) that uses a Subaru Boxer engine in place of the weaker, less reliable VW mill. In this amazing looking example, the Sabagon is mated to a VW Syncro van – which is friggin’ cool. I have never seen a better example.

Volkswagen T3 vans were rarely seen with the Syncro 4X4 system in the United States, but they were remarkably rugged. Despite looking tipsy sitting high on a beefed-up undercarriage and aggressive off-road tires, all of the mechanical bits sat very low, keeping the Syncro steady when battling off-road obstacles. Look for them on line and you won’t be disappointed.

This Subagon was located right next to TFLCar/Truck office in Boulder, CO.

Roman, Andre and I were so impressed, we left a note asking the owner of the Subagon if he/she was interested in doing a story or a video. These Subagon (and other VW Vans that DIY guys modified with Subie Boxers) vans like to use the 3-liter H-6 out of the Subaru SVX, but I have seen other mods using 2.5 and 2.5 turbos in the conversion. Could you imagine one of these Subagon conversions cranking out up to 300 hp!?

Subagon STI anyone?
