There is nothing more exciting for an automotive enthusiast than witnessing another horsepower war.  And the next shot comes from the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT and the Charger SRT.  You may remember that Dodge already unveiled the facelifted Challenger and Charger with the 392 HEMI Scat Pack just last month at the New York Auto Show.

Well, the folks at Dodge and SRT are not done.  And here they come the most powerful HEMI ever!  They call it the “Hellcat” and it is a 6.2L HEMI V8 with a supercharger that will be rated at 600-plus horsepower.  It has a unique 6.2 liters of displacement and should be capable to take the war to the Shelby Mustang GT500, Corvette Z06, or any other muscle car.

This monster will be available with an upgraded 6-speed manual transmission or the new 8-speed TorqueFlight automatic – capable of handling the massive power and torque.  The Hellcat should be a true tire melter and destroyer.  It will come with a Launch Control feature and a thorough host of performance measurement equipment and display gauges.  You can get a lap timer, g-meter, intake air temperature, air/fuel mixture, and on, and on.

The new SRT cars also get the larger brakes ever fitted to a Chrysler product.  There are a couple of fun ways to “unlock” or “lock” the full capability of the SRT and Hellcat.  Owners will get two keys: red and black.  It is the red key that unlocks full power and drive mode selections.  There is also a special Valet mode that severely reduces the performance envelope of the car.  It remaps the engine computer, limits it to 4,000 rpm, locks out first gear, disables launch control, defaults stability control to “full on”, and more.  Perhaps, it can also be called “Teenager mode”?

TFLcar has caught Hellcat test prototypes undergoing high altitude testing as early as October of 2013.
