Ford LightWeight Concept Turns a Fusion Into a Fiesta [Preview]

Ford has been testing aluminum components for the F-150 truck since 2011.  The next-generation 2015 Ford F-150 features an all-aluminum body.  Why not apply this know-how and much more to a sedan? Enter the Ford Lightweight Concept.

Ford really left no stone unturned on their quest for lighter weight and thus better efficiency.  We are talking about uses of aluminum structure, carbon fiber wheels, carbon composite oil pan, aluminum brake rotors, and even composite suspension springs.  And all this high-tech technology was made to look like the current Ford Fusion.  Although, Ford was able to bring its weight down to that of a Fiesta.

It means that the engineers were able to remove around 850 pounds from the 3,431 lbs Ford Fusion sedan!  That is very impressive!  Of course, lighter weight means a smaller engine can propel the car, the Lightweight Concept is using the 1.0L Ecoboost three-cylinder from the Fiesta.

Of course, this drastic weight reduction and exotic materials and processes do not come for free. Ford is working hard to figure out how to bring the price down and allow for mass production.
