Can You Identify This BMW? [Photo of the Day]

BMW 2002 Tii Touring

I believe this is a 1972 BMW. Before you spew-forth a simple 2002 answer, please note the rear flanks of the BMW. Yep. is’s not exactly something you see every day. In fact, only a handful of these BMWs made it to the United States as they were never officially imported.

Both Andre and I (we love small German cars) were freaking out the first time we saw one. Once again, it’s not something you see every day. The BMW in this photo was hanging out in the parking lot near the Concours d’LeMons. The other one of these, which we saw during our Prague to Pebble Beach visit to California, was parked at the Legends of the Autobahn concourse.

BMW fans often point out that the 2002, along with the 1500, 1600 and BMW Bavaria (among a few others) helped the company regain its sporting and luxury reputation that flourished pre-WWII. To me, the second generation BMW 2002 represents one of the most rewarding driving experiences you could have from any European vehicle of that period.

So, what type of BMW do you think this is? Was I right about the year? Let us know below!
