2015 Subaru Legacy 3.6R

How good is the all-new 2015 Subaru Legacy 3.6R? It needs to be very good in order to compete in the mid-size family sedan segment. Boy, this is a crowded and tough place to do business. Still, Subaru sold 6,198 Legacies in September of 2014, and more than doubled the numbers from previous year. They must be doing something right.

This is a top of the line 3.6R model. It means it has the 3.6L horizontally opposed six-cylinder boxer engine with 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. It’s a very smooth motor and it’s rated at 20 MPG city, 28 MPG highway and 23 MPG combined. However, the car returned an excellent average of 27.3 MPG after a week of mixed driving that favored the highway. This is a great number for an all-wheel-drive car of this size.

The fuel economy is there thanks to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). It keeps the engine in the power band when needed, and allows for efficient motoring when you don’t require all the ponies. The as-tested price here was $33,380 and also included Subaru’s very refined EyeSight system. This is the second generation of EyeSight. This safety and driver-helper system uses new color dual-cameras. It’s capable of lane watching, adaptive cruise control, and it will stop the car if there is an obstacle and the closing speed is less than 30 mph.

However, there are a couple of areas for improvement. Watch this full review of the 2015 Subaru Legacy, as Nathan finds out what the new sedan is made of.
