Gaining 291 lbs, the addition of an electric motor to power the front wheels of the Tesla Model S P85D is a small penalty to gain all-wheel drive (AWD). Formally a rear-drive only vehicle, the addition of the AWD system also adds 221 horsepower. That power (it’s the front wheels motor’s output) combined makes a total 691 hp. Better still, the Tesla Model S P85D makes 687 lb-ft of torque. The Tesla Model S P85D weighs 4,936 lbs.

Tesla says that the Tesla Model S P85D can run from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds.

There are new tech items that update the Tesla Model S P85D significantly, including Autopilot, which integrates 360 degree ultrasonic radar, long range radar, image recognition camera and GPS data integration with real-time traffic. These systems work independently to ensure maximum safety.

The idea of an AWD electric car shifts the paradigm of what it takes to make an AWD vehicle today. Remember: there are no transfer cases or even a proper transmission in the Tesla Model S P85D. The power is electronically portioned out to ensure maximum performance and all-weather safety.

TFLcar looks forward to testing the Tesla Model S P85D in Colorado – one of the best places to test AWD.
