2015 Chevrolet Equinox LT Performance Review: A Truly Unbelievable Lap Time

The 2015 Chevrolet Equinox is an affordable compact crossver/SUV that has spacious seating and a quiet, comfortable ride. Unfortunately, it is more utilitarian than fun to drive and the base engine could use more power. Even when outfitted with the optional V6, the Equinox is not particularly quick.

Standard equipment for the 2015 Chevy Equinox is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder direct-injection engine rated at 182 horsepower and 6-speed transmission. With an EPA-estimated 22/32 mpg city/highway, the 2015 Equinox gets good fuel economy for the class and can tow up to 1,500 pounds.

The available 3.6L V6 offers more power in the form of 301 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque. Plus, all-wheel drive (AWD) can be had if you need all-weather performance. Maximum towing capacity for the V6 is 3,500 pounds.

While the Equinox does not excel in the power category, it does well with excellent ride comfort and a quiet cabin.

Presently and for the foreseeable future, the Equinox is available in four trims, the base LS, the up-featured LT1, the almost-posh LT2 and the top-shelf LTZ. The base LS model comes with almost everything drivers need for a comfortable trip. The mid-range LT trims include luxury features such as Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, smartphone integration, and rearview camera.

The top-of-the-line Equinox LTZ trim features its most luxurious cabin and an upgraded powertrain. V6 power and firmer suspension tuning are the big ticket items of the LTZ trim. Rear parking sensors help drivers backup safely. High tech safety systems like forward collision alert and lane departure warning help drivers stay safe and avoid accidents.

The Chevrolet Equinox’s 63.7 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats are folded is above average for the class, but rivals like the Ford Escape and Subaru Forester offer a little more room. Cargo space with the rear seats up is 31.5 cubic feet.
