2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata Review: We Say Buy It, but with One Big Reservation [Video]

2016 Mazda MX-5

The redesigned 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata stays true to its roots and delivers an amazingly agile and fun-to-drive car that is hard to beat at almost any level. While it may have less horsepower than the previous generation NC MX-5, the little roadster is quick and carves through the turns leaving a huge smile on your face.

The Miata’s standard six-speed manual transmission is wonderful for stirring the gears, with short throws and smooth, precise action from gear to gear. A six-speed automatic is available, but don’t let Emme ever find out that you have one or there will be some seriously bad juju coming your way. Mazda’s SkyActiv technology enables the canyon carving convertible to get an EPA-estimated 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.

Terrific handling is the result of a double-wishbone design at the front, multiple links at the rear, Bilstein dampers and anti-roll bars at both ends. There is barely any noticeable body roll, yet when the road gets bumpy it soaks things up in a commendable fashion. Diving into corners it pivots brilliantly with balance and poise, and communicates with the driver like a seasoned rally co-driver.

Emme gives the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata a TFL Car “Buy It” rating, but with one big reservation. Tune in to Emme’s review and find out how the rabble roadster measures up in Emme’s eyes.
