2016 Volkswagen Beetle Dune First Drive Review: Baja Bug Re-imagined [Video]

2016 VW Beetle Dune - TFLcar

The 2016 Volkswagen Beetle Dune is a special edition package that tries to capture the iconic spirit of Baja Beetles of yore.

Inspired by classic Baja bugs, the Dune sits 0.4 inches higher and has a track that is 0.6 inches wider than a standard bug. It also comes with black wheel arches and new front and rear fascias that promote a more aggressive appearance. Other off-roadish additions include:

  • 18-inch Canyon aluminum alloy wheels
  • 235/45 all-season tires
  • Front skid plate (the rear diffuser also acts as a second skid plate)
  • A large rear spoiler
  • “Dune” graphics and three exterior color choices – Sandstorm Yellow, Pure White, and Deep Black Pearl

Inside, owners of the Dune Beetle will get a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel and sports seats with orange stitching. On the technology side, the Dune Beetle is equipped with the latest generation MIB II infotainment system with a 6.3-inch capacitive touchscreen and VW’s available Car-Net suite of features. The system promises to allow seamless integration with compatible smartphones via Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirrorlink, the three major smartphone platforms. An available technology package will add dual-zone climate controls, a Fender premium audio system, keyless access with push-button start, and a tilt-and-slide sunroof.

Is this really the “Baja Bug” for the 21st century? It has a higher ride height, it comes as a convertible, and it’s a front-wheel drive car. Plus, is it worth the additional cost? Roman Mica drives the latest Beetle Dune through the Nevada snow storm in search of the “Baja” spirit.
