Volvo Teases Upcoming XC40 and V40 [News]

Volvo Concept 40.1

Volvo has released concept images and information on its smaller series of cars and crossovers. The newly revealed 40 series concepts demonstrate how the Swedish automaker plans to expand their range of vehicles into the high-volume market of premium small cars and crossovers.

Volvo is in the midst of re-energizing its aging line-up with a new cast of cars and SUVs. The new XC90 is received accolades from the automotive press and popular public opinion. Volvo’s new flagship S90 luxury sedan is set to begin arriving in dealerships this summer, closely followed by the V90 wagon. The new 40-series cars marks the return of the small Volvo to the U.S. market.

The new 40-series will be built on Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), a smaller version of the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) that the Swedish firm designed to handle its larger vehicles. Noteworthy is one of the car’s key components — a plug-in hybrid setup that will be used on cars riding on its CMA modular platform.

Slotting under the next-generation XC60, the XC40 will be Volvo’s new entry-level crossover and will compete against the likes of the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. After the XC40, a new S40 sedan and V40 wagon will follow and will also ride on the CMA platform. All three 40 Series models are expected to reach the U.S. starting with the XC40, which should debut in production form for the 2018 model year.
