TFL Top 5: Important Tips When Buying a Car on Craigslist [Video]

Before buying that shiny new car on Craigslist, take a few moments to see if you’re making the right decision. But how do you know you are making the right decision?

TFL’s Roman Mica and Nathan Adlen have five tips for those who are buying vehicles from Craigslist. Their list is designed to help stop you, the buyer, from making any potential mistakes.

At the top of the list at number five, is making sure a person knows the value of the vehicle they’re buying. There are resources available online such as Kelly Blue Book, where a person can enter in the price and compare it with its used value.

That way, they can see if the price on Craigslist is fair or not. Roman, however, cautioned people that they may see price fluctuations by region. An all-wheel-drive vehicle command a higher price in an area where there’s off-roading opportunities or snowy weather compared to a place that’s flat and warm all the time.

Tip number four deals with searching for a vehicle. Craigslist has a search feature that enables a person to filter their results based on several conditions such as price, mileage, cost, color and others.

For tip number three, they told people to be aware of scams. Often times if the vehicle is too good to be true, it is. They’ve encountered some situations where a vehicle was being sold in several areas of the country.

Which led them to tip number two, which is how to spot a scam and to determine if a vehicle is valid. Roman and Nathan suggested emailing and calling the seller to get more information. If the person doesn’t want to talk on the phone and says they’re too busy, chances are it’s a scam.

They also said that they always try to find out why the person is selling the vehicle and learn more about the vehicle’s history.
