Mercedes-Benz: AMG Project ONE

Manufacturer race programs are often development platforms for technology that will eventually trickle down to cars we drive every day. The Mercedes-AMG Project One takes Formula 1 hybrid technology and transfers it to a street machine beyond your wildest dreams. The ultra-high-performance hybrid reportedly produces over 1,000 horsepower and is capable of a top speed norh of 215 MPH. The powertrain is a sophisticated integration of a 1.6-liter V6 hybrid and four electric motors. Only 275 units will be produced and supposedly all of them are already sold. The going price? Around $2 million each.

BMW: i8 Roadster

Crossovers are in big demand and becoming more pervasive. But if that doesn’t catch your fancy, how about a high-performance roadster? The rumor mill is buzzing with the possibility that BMW will finally reveal the production version of the i8 Roadster at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. The limited production plug-in hybrid coupe is an instant head-turner and BMW has been promising a roadster version for-EVER. BMW’s boss, Harald Krueger, confirmed at the Paris Motor Show this year that the BMW i8 Roadster is on track to arrive in 2018 as the line’s mid-cycle refresh. We think perpetually sunny California would make a perfect venue for a roadster debut.

Porsche: 718 Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS

A second roadster set to debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show is the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS. For those of a fixed roof disposition, the Boxster will debut alongside its hardtop brother, the Cayman GTS. Both GTS models get a 15 horsepower boost, for a grand total of 365. When equipped with the optional PDK transmission, both can zip to 60 miles per hour in under 4 seconds and reach a top track speed of 180 miles per hour.

Standard equipment for the GTS includes torque vectoring with a mechanical rear differential lock, Sport Chrono Package, and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which lowers the sport coupe 10 millimeters (0.39 inches). Visual cues to look for are black accents inside and out, 20-inch matte black wheels, Alcantara sport seats with an embroidered GTS logo, and more Alcantara trim throughout the cabin.

BMW: M3 CS, X7 iPerformance Concept, 6 Series GT

If the i8 Roadster doesn’t make an appearance, BMW will still light up the stage with its first ever M3 CS. This limited edition model develops 453 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, which launches it from zero to 60 in 3.7 seconds and maxes out at 174 miles per hour. BMW made the CS more hardcore by way of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic parts and shedding 110 pounds compared to the regular M3.

BMW’s X7 iPerformance Concept and 6 Series Gran Turismo are also set to make their North American debut. The X7 plug-in hybrid brings together BMW’s eDrive technology and a TwinPower turbocharged straight-6. This range-topping SUV also illustrates a new corporate look for BMW that features a large, vertical single-piece kidney grille and frame, and wide, low-profile twin headlights. The 6 Series GT picks up where the 540i GT left off in a sleeker, stretched out package around a sculpted interior with lots of sharp lines and luxury feel that could satisfy almost any passenger.

Volvo and Toyota: New crossovers (XC40 and FT-AC Concept, respectively)

The market for crossovers continues unabated and the automakers keep feeding the money machine with new and improved models. Volvo will be pulling off the wraps on the XC40, a small B-class CUV, for its U.S. debut. Toyota could surprise us with a new crossover, as well, judging by the teaser above. We’ll find out what Toyota has to offer when they take the wraps off their new FT-AC “adventure” concept.

Ten years is a long time for any car model to be around without a major redesign, but that’s how long the current Jeep Wrangler JK has been on the market. Finally, the next-generation Wrangler JL will officially debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. Images of the redesigned 2018 Wrangler JL were released at SEMA last month, followed by a photo of the interior on November 8. On top of that, the editors at Roadshow discovered the new Wrangler will go into production later this year. We’re anxiously awaiting its arrival, as are most Wrangler enthusiasts.

Subaru: Ascent Three-Row SUV

Closing one of the gaps it has left in its lineup, Subaru now has a three-row SUV. The 2018 Ascent will be the biggest in Subaru’s line up, as well as its first all-new vehicle in more than five years. The production version is based on the Ascent concept, which was revealed at the New York International Auto Show in April. Under the hood is 2.4-liter turbocharged, direct-injected flat-four engine. Watch for more details straight from the floor of the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Mitsubishi: Eclipse Cross

Mitsubishi is hanging on in the North American market despite lackluster sales and coming under scrutiny in a fuel economy scandal. The Japanese automaker is banking on the highly-competitive crossover segment to improve its fortunes. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, a melding of a sports coupe and SUV, the first in a trio of new crossovers, will make its official North American debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Infiniti: Refreshed QX80

U.S. customers get their first chance to lay hands on the mildly refreshed Infiniti QX80. The full-size, premium SUV just debuted at the Dubai International Auto Show. The biggest visual changes are revised front and rear fascias that feature a grille flipped upside down, slimmer running lights, a new shape for the taillights, and a single horizontal chrome strip that stretches from corner to corner. Inside the plush cabin are added choices of Wheat or Graphite diamond-stitched upholstery, larger infotainment screens, HDMI ports, larger smartphone cubbies and cupholders for cups with handles. Even the storage bin under the center armrest has increased to a mammoth 1.4 gallons (5.4-liters) in volume.
