Meet the new boss, same as the old, old, old boss: Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Mercedes-Benz has revamped the G-Wagen for 2019. No, I’m not kidding, they really did! It looks extremely similar to the old one on the outside, but Mercedes has given it a thorough revision. In fact, only three parts carry over from the old model, claims Mercedes. The door handle is the same, but virtually everything else is different. The G-Class is an opulent car for well-heeled Hollywood types, and that’s reflected in the design of the new model. The G-Wagen sports LED halo running lights, fantastic interior materials, and more tech than you can shake an iPhone at.

For the first time, the G-Class also wields independent front suspension. There’s still a solid rear axle in back and it’s still body-on-frame, but Mercedes is aiming this car more at the on-road crowd, it seems. Those who want to take this car back to its German Army roots, however, should find it’s just as capable off-road, despite the axle change. The 2019 G550 will still pack a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, same as the current model.
