The 2011 Jaguar XJL is a very big luxury sedan with a very big 385 HP 5.0L V8 engine.

Sitting in the roomy back seat of the stretched Jag can be an absolute treat with fine leather seats and plenty of leg room to stretch out and get comfy. The 2011 Jaguar XJL will easily transport a British royal or a London businessman across town in silent, modern luxury.

However is the back seat the best place to be in the Jaguar XJL? Perhaps it is better to drive than to ride in this newest luxury Jaguar.

In other words, does driver of the XJL have all the fun?

There's no doubt that the Jaguar can get mighty frisky when the road turns twisty. In fact the Jaguar XJL is one of the most engaging big luxury sedans sold today with precise steering, solid straight line stability, and of course plenty of power to put the common cars in their place.

Anybody can review a Camaro vs. a Mustang in a straight line. It's been done tens of thousands of times over the years, but what about an 2012 Audi A7 vs a Jaguar XFR?

The 2012 Audi A7 is following on the design heals of the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Volkswagen CC and of course BMW GT. Audi says that the new five door, four seat car slots right in between the company's mid-sized A6 and luxurious A8. With a supercharged V6 310 HP engine, 20' inch wheels, Quattro all-wheel-drive, and an eight speed transmission, the A7 is Audi's newest, and perhaps most handsome, cars.

The Jaguar XFR brings to the table a supercharged V8 that 510 pumps out 510 tire-shredding horsepower, 20 inch wheels, and enough British flavor to fill your morning cup of tea.

Both of these cars represent the best engineering that Europe has to offer today to the rest world.

With 470 horsepower, and plenty of room for five adults, you'd think the supercharged Jaguar XJ would be a ponderous heavy weight stalking the top shelf BMWs and Mercs of the world. Reviewing the 2011 Jaguar XJ proved to be an usual challenge. As a shallow man who thrives on visual stimulation, I agree with people who find the imperfect to be the most alluring. For all things beautiful, there is something about the 2011 Jaguar XJ that defies perfection. Cyrano de Bergerac works because of his depth, personality, gallantry and poetic prose – but he would be just another putz with a crush if it weren’t for his huge honker.

Flaws can indeed enhance beauty.

Take the scrumptious 2011 Jaguar XJ – it is so beautiful, so sinuous and powerful – but, it has a few issues. More on those “issues” a bit later; right now I want you to experience what only a lucky few have experienced.

Why?

Three simple reasons.

1) While the Jaguar XK convertible may be a four-seater, the backseats are only fit for miniature monkeys or huge hamsters. Which means that if you own a Jaguar XK convertible...you also own a least one other car ( if not several other cars) for your friends and family.

The words stodgy, country-clubby, and hoity-toity have always been words I’ve used to describe Jaguars (pronounced Jag-YOU-ar, Darling). It’s a shame my test drive of the 2010 Jaguar XF only lasted a week. The XF is a vehicle that just kept getting better and better the more I drove it. At first it was a little unassuming in it’s grey paint job. But it too just got better the more I looked at it. At some moments it looked almost gold, at other times silvery gray, depending on the light.

There is something about a Jag’s elegance and grace that most automakers have yet to duplicate.

The Good

You got to love the British. Not only do they have a way with iconic cars, but also iconic words. Take the word whinging for instance. As used in the following comment posted on my recent video review (see below) of the XF.

"Brilliant car, but this guy is just whinging about trivial stuff, personally i think the radio turning off whilst reversing is a great idea by Jaguar!!!"

"To complain in a moaning manner," that's what whinging means when spoken with that distinct British accent.
