“Yea, but she has a hell of a good personality!” “Did it eat the old Outback?”– Or –
“If that car was a cartoon character, it would be ‘Velma’ from Scooby-Doo.” - - as quoted by a few critics of the 2010 Subaru Outback.
What can I say? I liked Velma.
I admit my bias for Subaru products. Not only am I a Coloradoan, a (less-than-successful)
fisherman and former owner of Subaru products – I love the independent
nature of the company. Recently, they embarked on a program to redesign
their midsized car to become more competitive (read: larger) in the
segment, the results for the Legacy were mixed and I expected the same
for the Outback.
Much to my surprise, the Outback is something else.

Give us three minutes and we'll give you the scoop.
The Subaru Outback has long been the most popular choice of cars for people who live in places that are horizontally and summer challenged.
In other words, places such as Colorado where the roads turns upwards and the snow falls and falls and falls.

Have you ever followed a small local band that eventually hit the big time?
Perhaps you were one of the first fans of that Rock band that today is selling out stadiums around the world.
Do you still like their music?
Is it the same as when you first heard them at some small club in the big city?
Think of Subaru as that band. While the rest of the automotive industry was in free fall (for most of this year) Subaru actually managed to do the unthinkable. The small Japaneses car company increased sales.

I had to think long and hard regarding the new Legacy and its changes.
There are so many changes that one would be hard-pressed to link last
generation’s performance and style with this one. In fact, other than
the engine and some odds and ends – this is a COMPLETELY different car.

Have you ever had one of those moments when you are flying down the
road and you realize that the car you are driving fits you like an
expensive designer dress at your 20th High School reunion?
You think to yourself, this car is just perfect for me. I love the
way it looks, I love the way it drives, and I love how I look in it, I
want this car!
Strangely enough I had one of those moments with the newest and one
of the more powerful Subarus: the 2010 Foresters 2.5XT Limited.
I say strangely because the Forester is not the kind of car I think of myself as driving into the sunset.

Way back in the prehistoric days of the crossover car era, the
Forester was one of the first vehicles to be forged from the primordial
soup that combined the DNA of a car with that of the SUV.
When
the elements cooled and the steam drifted away, the Forester stood
tallish and proud in the vanguard of the new crossover craze.
Others would follow in its tracks, but it was the Forester that showed them the way.

The year is 1982 and I'm folded in the back seat of my friend
Tracy's Plymouth Barracuda. We're flying up I-70 just past George Town
in the section of the highway that gets very steep very fast. The
'Cuda's exhaust is reverberating up and down the canyon like distance
cannon fire as it leaves the flimsy glass pack duel mufflers that do
little to silence the monster Hemi engine's roar.
Tracy has
painted his car a bright orange, but as benefits a car like the 'Cuda
the hood, roof, functional hood scoop, and trunk are jet black. Back in
1982 a collage freshman could still afford a Cuda and Tracy was cool
long before the car became expansive and cool again.
