Toyota has just announced that it has sold the one millionth hybrid in the U.S. under the Toyota and Lexus brands.

It
took nine years for Toyota to reach that mark, and now it hopes to sell
another one million hybrids "sometime early in the next decade."

Currently
Toyota owns 75 percent of the U.S. hybrid market with total worldwide
sales of 1.7 million cars. Today the company has six hybrid models,
with plans to launch 10 more by 2012.

The Prius accounts for 700
million hybrids sold by Toyota in the U.S. and the Prius is the third
most poplar car in the Toyota model line-up just behind the Camry and
Corolla.

In the next few weeks Toyota will launch the third generation of the Prius which is expected to top the 50-mpg mark.
