Poll: 62 percent say government should let GM go bust

You may recall this famous statement made by Charles E. Wilson while president of the General Motors Corporation, “What’s good for the country is good for General Motors, and vice versa.”

But a more updated version of the statement could go, “What’s good for GM isn’t all that great for the country, but what’s bad for AIG is certainly bad for the country.

At least that’s what most Americans seem to believe.

In
fact in a recent Rasmussen Reports’ poll found that 76% of U.S. voters
surveyed believed the economy could recover even without GM in
business. Fifteen percent said they weren’t sure and 9% disagreed.

In
other words, over three quarters of the 1000 people surveyed believed
that GM could go bankrupt and perhaps even out of business without
hurting the economy.

According to the Detroit Free Press:

“The
poll also found that 62% opposed the government giving GM and Chrysler
additional taxpayer-backed loans to stay in business.

Fifty-nine
percent believed it was “very likely” or “somewhat likely” that GM or
Chrysler would go out of business over the next few years.

The poll, conducted on Monday and Tuesday, surveyed 1,000 likely voters and had a margin of error of 3%.”
