2010 Dakar Stage 4 Preview: The Atacama Desert

Dakarmap2 Organizers have postponed the start of Stage 4 of the 2010 Dakar Rally by 1.5 hours and shortened the stage.

This was due in large part because of the late arrival of many of the racers during stage three.

You can see complete stage three results and recap HERE, along with the current race standings.

Stage four of the 2010 Dakar Rally will be the first boarder crossing, as well as one of the higher stages of the race with competitors racing to almost 14,000 feet above sea level.

The day's stage also features the Atacama Desert which is one of the driest places on the earth.

According to the 2010 Dakar Rally's web site:

"The competitors will cross the Andes Mountains and the
border between Argentina and Chile at an altitude of more than 4000 m,
before heading towards the Atacama Desert to dispute a 203-km long
special stage… All the competitors will be confronted with a short but
technical timed section including a quick first part followed by more
than 100 km of sand and dunes. This could lead to some big gaps amongst
the professional riders. It will also be the last opportunity for most
of the competitors to adjust their settings for sand before really
getting to grips with the most arid desert in the world
."
