Highwaymen

2003 – More of a thriller chase flick than a full-on horror flick.

This is a well made, car-based horror flick. Well, it’s more “thriller” than “horror” to be honest. There’s great car action throughout as the protagonist searches out the mutilated evil-doer who uses his Cadillac as his killing tool. The good guy is seeking revenge for the death of his wife at the hands… I mean wheels of the bad guy.

Three reasons to dig this movie:

James Caviezel’s 1968 Plymouth Barracuda Super Stock 426 Hemi. It’s got a four-speed manual transmission with a pistol grip Hurst shifter baby!
Fargo, the mutilated baddie hunts down and kills women using a 1972 Cadillac El Dorado. Finally – a non-pimp movie use for the El Dorado.
Robert Harmon’s excellent directing. He gives the film a dark, bleak look and keeps up the tension throughout.

I like the fact that the engine sounds are realistic and the stunt driving is quite good.

Sure, the overall premise is not very believable and I was thirsting for more gore – it’s still an exciting movie. I liked the idea of a freaked out, multiple-amputee killing without mercy. Also, it’s interesting to see the protagonist act a bit schmuck-ish by using his damsel in distress as bait.

Definitely worth the buck or two it costs for renting!

Cool fact: This is the first movie to use a 1972 Cadillac El Dorado as a killing implement.
