Top 5 Spooky Car Flicks: #4 Maximum Overdrive

Max2

And our number four Spooky car flick is…Maximum Overdrive.

1986 – A silly horror that’s wholesome fun for the whole family.

Okay – I fully admit that this is not the best of Steven King’s horror movies. It is a great movie for folks who shy away from full blown horror movies as there really isn’t that much gore. To be honest, it’s not that scary either.

Still, for those of you who like the idea of evil trucks killing people – this might be your flick.

Maximum Overdrive is based on Trucks. This is one of King’s short stories which he originally published in 1973 and later used in 1978 Night Shift collection of short stories.

I have never read the book and I’m sure Mr. King has a deeper meaning in using trucks (among other machines like lawnmowers). Maybe it’s an anti OPEC stance he’s secretly taken. Still, this movie represented Steven King’s directorial debut and considering his excellent choice of using AC/DC for the soundtrack – we can forgive the film’s simplicity.

The point is – – – well – – – I guess there isn’t much of a point. It’s simple, popcorn-eating fun that pits Emilio Estevez against these evil trucks. Most of the action happens in or near the Dixie Boy truck-stop in North Carolina.

Cool fact: The director of photography lost an eye during an on-set accident. No one is safe from Steven King!
