2014 Audi S3 to get 300 Horses from just 2.0 liters

At the heart of the 2014 Audi S3 is this 2.0 liter turbo making 300hp

The current North American Audi A3 is getting long in the tooth and we don’t even get an S3 right now.  However, the next generation of A3/S3 are being introduced in Europe and they should be coming to our shores sooner or later.  Hopefully sooner!  Now, we know more details about the upcoming 2014 Audi S3.  The big news are under the hood.

There lies the latest version of the EA888 architecture 2.0 liter TFSI motor.  The engineers in Ingolstadt have been very busy.  This is basically a completely redesigned power plant that shares only its displacement with its predecessor.  This aluminum light weight wonder pumps out 300 hp starting at 5,500 rpm and 280 ft-lb of torque between 1,500-5,500 rpm.  That’s correct.  This motor does 150 horsepower per liter of displacement.  There are not many engines that have higher specific output, and all of them find home in exotics like the McLaren P1.

Of course, Audi took a holistic approach with the design of the next S3.  As impressive as the new 2.0 liter motor is, Audi also says this car will be capable of 34 US mpg average with S-tronic automatic.  Granted, this is not an EPA rating, but it’s still highly impressive for a performance car equipped with All Wheel Drive.  How quick is the next S3 Quattro?  Audi says it’s capable of 0-62 mph sprints of 4.9 seconds with 6 speed S-tronic and using Launch Control.  This is the same as the current S5!

We hope Audi sends the S3 to America soon (Audi has not provided any timeline yet or whether the S3 will be on sale in the US).  We cannot wait to test this hot hatch.  In the meantime, I have to console myself watching this 2013 Audi S5 video.
