Ford should buy Fisker and sell them as Lincolns

Why the hell not? I know this is all editorial and it’s not based on any announcement, proclamation or prediction – but, you have to admit, it’s an intriguing idea. Lincoln is struggling to find or rediscover its identity. There was a time when Lincoln was cool, unique and thought out of the box. Think about it: remember any great Lincolns? Did they look like Fords?

Fisker is in a bad way. Their finances are screwed, they lack the deep pockets needed for serious R&D while their product languishes.

I would be surprised if they avoid bankruptcy or a buyout over the next few months. If they are acquired, they will most likely be dismantled and sold off. This would be such a shame as Fisker had so much potential.

What if they had a new parent company who gave them the resources to retool, revitalize and update their entire fleet with some of the best automotive manufacturing resources on earth?

Stay with me: look at these needs that could be addressed!

  • The Fisker Karma needs better quality control. Done, Ford could do that.
  • The Fisker Karma  needs a new, compact, efficient gas engine to work as a ranger extender. Done, Ford’s EcoBoost could fit that bill.
  • The Fisker Karma is pricey. Ford could cut the overhead by using standardized components and apply mass production to lower the overall price by a massive margin.
  • The Fisker Karma needs to fix a myriad of electrical glitches to gain a better reliability reputation. Done, Ford did that with Jaguar back in the day.
  • The Fisker Karma’s interior is okay, but there are lots of places where it looks like it’s a kit-car. I’ve seen huge panel gaps, places where glue and jagged material can be seen. Fixed! Ford is making exceptional interiors.
  • … And – dude, the road noise is terrible for a luxury car. Ford is making some of the quietest vehicles on the road. Their skill with sound deadening is superb.

Look, I know it’s a stretch and it will (probably) never happen, but, could you imagine? On the opposite side of the equation is Lincoln. If they bring in some fresh ideas for restyling the Fisker Karma, which is one of the best looking sedans out there, they might pull themselves out of this styling funk.

If nothing else, Roman Mica, Andre Smirnov and I think it would be a cool idea.

Such a cool idea… I hope something is done to save it.
