That’s right!  The 2014 Nissan Versa Note hatchback can be had with a good old 5-speed manual transmission and at a very affordable $13,990.  There are three trim levels of this new economy hatch: S, S Plus, and SV.  They all share the same 1.6-liter 109 hp normally aspirated four cylinder.  The S Plus and the SV make use of Nissan’s CVT transmission to eek out an impressive 31 MPG city and 40 MPG highway rating.  If you are rowing your own gears on the S model, that one is rated at 27/36 MPG.

If you prefer your small car to be fully laden with options and technology gadgets, then you are in luck.  The SV trim can be loaded with an SL and a SL Tech Package.  The latter offers you Nissan’s Around View Monitor.  Yes, this is the same cool overhead view technology that was only offered on high-end Infinitis just a couple of years ago.  When you are done checking off the optional packages, your Note SV would be sitting at $19,280.  However, you don’t have to stop there.  You can continue to upgrade your ride with Chrome package, Sporty wheels, Rear roof spoiler, and other accessories to push this hatch close to $21,000.  This a very good value when you compare it option for option against the competition.

The 2014 Nissan Versa Note will be doing battle against the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, and other entry-level hatchbacks.  The Note looks to be on good footing.  Its 35 MPG combined rating is best in class.  It is one of the most roomy among the competitors, and it is very aggressively priced.  And, it is a good looker in my opinion.  It may still be one of the slowest cars that we at TFLcar will test this year, but speed is not the primary objective here.  An economy hatchback should be useful, nimble, and affordable.  I cannot wait to test the 2014 Note and see how it does.
