Fast Take: The 2014 Mazda6 Is a Sporty, Fun Ride

2014 Mazda6

The 2014 Mazda6 has been completely redesigned this year from the exterior and interior styling to the powertrain, and the result is a car that’s sporty, fun and practical all at the same time.

I had a chance to drive the new 2014 Mazda6 in Oregon last week at an event called Heels and Wheels. The idea was to bring women automotive journalists together to drive some cars and talk about what we want from a car. For more than a few of us, the answer was the 2014 Mazda6.

The redesign has taken this mid-size sedan and turned it into a functional family car that is all-out fun to drive. The exterior gives subtle hints as to what’s in store behind the wheel with a low front-end and a long hood that make it look like it’s ready to leap forward.

Inside, drivers will find themselves in a roomy and incredibly comfortable interior. There are supportive seats, a leather wrapped steering wheel and plenty of storage thanks to a good-sized glovebox, door pockets and a center console compartment. The rear also has ample room with plenty of space for three additional passengers.

Everything on the dashboard is in easy reach of not just the driver, but the passenger. It has a cradled, cock-pit like feel when you’re driving, but the person sitting next to you won’t feel like they’re leaning half-way across the car to change the radio station.

Turn on the engined and the 2014 Mazda6 sheds its mid-size sedan trimmings and becomes a hot little sports coupe. It handles beautifully, holding tight corners and accelerating smoothly yet aggressively.

The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is a joy to drive. It gives you 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft torque that easily move the car along the road. This car is so light and fast on its feet that you’ll forget you’re in a mid-size sedan.

The 2014 Mazda6 might be a practical mid-size sedan in name, but it thinks it’s a sports coupe, and that’s a very good thing.

Nicole Wakelin fell in love with cars as a teenager when she got to go for a ride in a Ferrari. It was red and it was fast and that was all that mattered. Game over. She considers things a bit more carefully now, but still has a weakness for fast, beautiful cars. Nicole also writes for NerdApproved and GeekMom.
