Sales: Ford Escape is on top of September 2013 Mid-Size Crossover Segment

September 2013 was a tough month for most automakers across all segments.  The mid-size crossovers were not immune, but fared better than the mid-size sedan market.  There were six nameplates that posted monthly year-over-year growth in September: Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-5, Jeep Compass, Toyota RAV4, Jeep Patriot, and Volkswagen Tiguan.  The all-new Forester and CX-5 are on a roll and are sitting outside the top five.

Most nameplates are looking at significant year-to-date sales growth, but the Hyundai Tucson and KIA Sportage are suffering double-digit declines.  Unlike the mid-size sedan segment, the Japanese big-three are not dominating the sales chart.  Ford Escape sold most units in September 2013 over the Honda CR-V.  These two are neck in neck with the CR-V having a very slight YTD sales advantage.  The all-new Toyota RAV4 is seeing healthy gains, but still has a long way to go to catch the top two.  The Chevrolet Equinox sits firmly in fourth place and Nissan Rogue rounds out the top five.

This space is about to get even more competitive with the all-new 2014 Nissan Rogue and all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee entering the fight.
