What happens when you give the latest Volkswagen Beetle a two-inch suspension lift, some cool orange paint, and a rack on the back to carry items like skis or boards?  You get the Volkswagen Dune Concept unveiled today at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

This concept started life a 2014 VW Beetle and uses the 210 hp 2.0-liter turbocharged engine from the production R-line car.  However, it has been raised two inches, widened, and lengthened slightly.  The accent-colored wheel flares house 19-inch rims and tires with a bit more profile for going past where the pavement ends.  The hood and front facia have been updated for this concept, and the new round fog lights up front add a whole new character.

Hatch mounted rack can carry two pairs of skies as shown, and other outdoor activity accessories.  Volkswagen calls this car “Baja Bug”, which harkens to air-cooled off-road machines from the past (and present, as Emme Hall can attest to).
