All 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 Engines Will Be Replaced Due To Fires

Porsche has announced that they’ve found a solution to those pesky bursting into flames problems that owners of the Porsche 911 GT3 have experienced since the car was introduced. They’ll be replacing the engines in every single vehicle.

The problem initially became an issue when there were engine fires in two different 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 vehicles which had only just been delivered to customers. In the interest of safety, Porsche asked owners to stop driving the vehicles, going so far as to have their local Porsche dealer come pick up the vehicle from wherever it was parked.

The cause of the fires was narrowed down to a single failed part that then caused a cascade of issues resulting in the fires. It all starts with a loosened fastener on the connecting rod. Once the fastener comes loose, the now loose connecting rod causes damages to the crankcase. That in turn causes oil leakage and it’s that oil that catches fire.

The new 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 had already been delivered to 785 customers and now every one of them will be fitted with a replacement engine in which the fasteners have been optimized so as not to come loose. The engine swap will also happen in any vehicles that had been produced but not yet delivered, and will be the version in all 2014 911 GT3s produced going forward.

This should make Richard Hammond happy, as he has been mercilessly mocked by Top Gear co-host Jeremy Clarkson over having his 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 taken away due to the fire hazard.
