2015 Ford Mustang Gets Improved Performance and Efficiency With….Curtains?

2015 Ford Mustang

The all-new 2015 Ford Mustang shows off a new interpretation of the iconic Mustang shape that includes aerodynamic technology to improve its efficiency and its performance, including a lovely set of curtains. These aren’t like the ones you’ll find hanging on your windows, but rather special front-wheel aero curtains.

The aero curtains are vertical slots at the edge of the front fascia that direct the air from the front of the 2015 Ford Mustang to the wheel wells to the outer surface of the wheel and tire. This serves to reduce drag on the car which is a major factor affecting vehicle performance.

As the speed of the car increases, the amount of horsepower needed to overcome drag increases at a much higher rate. Twice the speed requires eight times the horsepower to keep the car slicing through the air so even the smallest changes can result in big performance increases.

In addition to the use of front-wheel aero curtains, the 2015 Ford Mustang also has a grille that allows for optimum flow of air to cool the engine. There are three different powerplants for the car, and each has a specially designed grille. This is paired with active grille shutters to reduce drag even more at high speeds.

The myriad small chances to the vehicle’s design have reduced drag force on the all-new 2015 Ford Mustang by 3%. This translates into not just better handling, but 1% better fuel efficiency.
