First Impression: 2014 Lexus GX 460 – Baby LX

The 2014 Lexus GX 460 gets a facelift for the new model year.  It literally has an all new front facia that includes the familiar corporate spindle grille, and new headlights with Lexus signature LED running lights.  The headlights are aesthetically pleasing, but the large protruding grilles looks odd.  The lower valance is a little lower and wider to allow for improved aerodynamics, but makes for a slightly worse approach angle if you have to take this proper SUV off-road.  By the way, the 2014 GX also has new tail lights.

This is still a true body-on-frame SUV.  The chassis and powertrain remain untouched as Toyota/Lexus have done with nearly all of recent trucks and pickups.  The 4.6L V8 still makes 301 hp and 329 lb-ft of torque and sends power to full-time 4WD system via a 6-speed automatic transmission. You still get an adjustable air suspension system, low 4×4 range, and locking center differential.

You can jack up the suspension to the highest setting, put it in 4LO, lock the diff, and get to many remote areas.  However, please pay careful attention to the approach and departure angles.

In many ways, the GX is a baby brother to the 2014 Lexus LX 570.  It has a very similar feeling and many features, including a smallish third-row.

Video mashup and full written review of the 2014 GX 460 are coming up soon, but check out this fun TFLcar off-road review including the 2013 model.
