The next generation Mazda2 will get the new, 1.5-liter SKYACTIVE-D (diesel). It should make 77 kW at 4,000 rpm (about 103 horsepower) and 250 N-m (over 184 lbs-feet of torque) from 1,500 to 2,000 rpm. Did you see that torque number? The big question is: will this diesel-powered Mazda2 make it to the United States?

It would be cool.

“The newly developed and adopted new-generation technology, “Sky Active technology”, 1.5L clean diesel engine “SKYACTIV-D 1.5”, Mazda Motor Corporation (Mazda) is equipped with the new in “Mazda Demio”.

M2 skyactive diesel
Similarly new generation clean diesel engine, which is mounted on a “Mazda CX-5” already a “SKYACTIV-D 2.2”, “SKYACTIV-D 1.5” to pursue the “combustion of ideal” while employing a low compression ratio have. As a result, while achieving high environmental performance of an expensive NOx after-treatment device without, and run full torque of the 2.5L gasoline engine the same level, and has realized the power excellent performance high rpm to accelerate linearly.

For following the innovations of many that realized in the “SKYACTIV-D 2.2”, to prevent “further the expansion of homogeneous lean region” in the combustion, the cooling loss increase due to engine downsizing “insulation” technology, further “machine such as adding adopt a fuel economy improvement technologies, such as drag reduction “, we have evolved as the best powertrain in a compact car.” – – Mazda Media

The only exposure North America has to small, efficient diesels is from Volkswagen. While VW is no slouch, they have yet to build and sell cars as small as the Mazda2 to the United States equipped with diesels. I’m sure more than a few automakers are keeping an eye on this story.
