The 2016 Smart ForTwo marks the third generation of the tiny runabout and it’s getting ever closer to American release. The all-new Smart is supposed to go on sale in the US at the end of calendar 2015.

The new car shares its platform with the third-generation Renault Twingo, and keeps the rear-engine configuration. Information on the US version is still scarce, but two three-cylinder engines are expected. The 999cc naturally aspirated engine with 71 horsepower. It has to move 1,940 pounds of Smart’s curb weight. This version has a leisurely 14.4 second 0-62 MPH acceleration, according to Smart.

The other choice is the turbocharged 898cc three-cylinder that is good for 90 horsepower and approximately 96 lb-ft of torque @ 2,500 rpm. It’s rated at a more feisty 10.4 second 0-62 MPH acceleration. The 6-speed dual-clutch automatic is the more likely choice for the US. It’s not known whether the 5-speed manual will make it to these shores.

The 2016 Smart is still tiny. It’s 105.9 inches long, 65.4 inches wide, and has a turning diameter of 23 feet. This is less than the 26.4 feet turning ability of the Scion iQ. The trunk can hold between 9.2 and 12.4 cu-ft depending on how you cram.

The new ForTwo will have an array of safety and technology features, including: crosswind assist, collision warning, and lane-keep assist. Not all of these will be standard, but can be added as options.
