2016 Sonata Hybrid

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid have made their debut this afternoon at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS 2015).  The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid will use a new 2.0-L four-cylinder engine mated to a 38kW electric motor and lithium-polymer battery pack.

The combination, Hyundai says, is good for a combined 204 HP (up from 199 combined HP last year).  The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid channels its power through an updated six-speed automatic transmission, which now has an electrically-controlled (versus oil-controlled) pump for greater efficiency.

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In will deliver a class-leading 22 miles of EV-only range when it goes on sale in the US later this year.  Additionally, the Sonata Plug-In can complete a full Level-2 charge in less than two and a half hours.

Providing the Sonata Plug-In’s electric propulsion will be a 9.8 kWh lithium polymer battery pack, which Hyundai says is roughly five times larger than the Sonata Hybrid’s high-voltage battery.   A 50kW electric motor will provide EV-only propulsion up to and including highway speeds.  Total system output is 202 HP.

Fuel economy for the Sonata Plug-In is rated at 38 MPG in the city, 43 MPG on the highway and 40 MPG combined based on Hyundai’s internal testing.

Fuel economy for the Sonata Hybrid is rated at 39 MPG in city, 44 MPG on the highway, and 42 MPG combined based on Hyundai’s internal testing.  Additionally, the lithium-polymer battery pack in the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has been relocated to the floor of the trunk, allowing for 10 percent more cargo capacity.
