Volkswagen Rumored to Unveil Microbus Concept at CES

VW electromobility concept teaser CES 2016

Volkswagen issued a press release announcing the Chairman of VW Passenger Cars brand, Dr Herbert Diess, will be the keynote speaker for next month’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The topic will cover the latest developments in electromobility and next generation connectivity.

This announcement has put the rumor mill on overdrive with the possibility that VW will launch a new Microbus at CES in conjunction with the keynote speech. Dimensionally smaller than a Transporter, the new concept illustrates a new all-electric drivetrain that will power VW’s upcoming battery-powered models and affirm VW’s commitment to affordable long-distance electromobility.

If the rumor turns out to be true, the next Volkswagen Bus could appear as a near-production concept at CES. That could mean a new microbus conceivably added to the lineup as a regular production model in time for the 2018 model year. It will be built alongside the Beetle and the Golf in Puebla, Mexico, a factory that previously churned out the original Bus and the original Beetle.
