It has been a turbulent time for the Volkswagen group ever since the ‘dieselgate‘ scandal became headline news back in September. It was estimated 11 million vehicles were affected after it was revealed that VW engineers had programmed a ‘cheat’ mode into the subroutine that allowed VW’s 2.0-liter diesel engines pass U.S. EPA emissions tests — when in reality, the diesel engines were spewing 40 times the legal amount of hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. And the news kept getting worse as the investigation went into full swing and more details were revealed.

Five months later, VW’s diesel scandal is so complex and wide-reaching, it may take months – if not years – before the company settles all of the related issues, pay the hefty fines, and contend with the heavy number of civil lawsuits that sprouted up in the wake of the scandal. Here is an infographic that gives a clear picture of the facts, which cars were affected, the action VW has taken, and the affect how the higher volume of emissions being expelled is effecting the environment and on public health.
