Is the 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 hot or not? [Video]

This episode of TFLcar Leaderboard Hot or Not takes a slightly different approach than other weeks. This week, we got a chance to take a 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 around our test track thanks to a viewer, so we jumped at the chance.

The Cayman GT4 is a car that makes the case as the best car Porsche makes, which is near blasphemy for the 911 faithful. But as the 911 has gotten bigger and more powerful, the Cayman hearkens back to the classic 911s, with its tight dimensions, real-world power and six-speed manual transmission (no automatics or dual-clutch systems here).

Under the hood – well, under the rear hatch and engine flap – is a 3.8-liter flat-six that makes 385 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque. And it does it without any forced induction, or hybrid electric motor trickery, or anything like that. Just a powerful engine driving the rear wheels.

Outside, the Cayman looks enough like a 911 to fool most uneducated onlookers. The test car was painted in a great shade of blue that looks a lot like the blue used in the new Ford Focus RS.

This episode is a bit different because normally, TFL’s Roman Mica would drive the car for a week in real-world situations, and TFL’s test driver Paul Gerrard would flog it around IMI Motorsports Park in Dacono, Colorado. In this case, though, the car is owned by someone else. So only Paul got to take it around the track, and he’s the one who will determine if it’s hot or not.

Watch the full video above to watch some gratuitous Porsche track footage and to find out if the Cayman GT4 is hot or not. I think you can probably guess, but the Cayman also has a chance to set a lap record.
