Chevrolet’s all-new 2018 Equinox will have segment’s first diesel [News]

Chevrolet Equinox

Chevrolet unveiled the all-new 2018 Equinox crossover, with an all-turbocharged engine lineup and the segment’s first available diesel.

The 2018 Equinox is new from the ground up, employing a new architecture that is 400 lbs lighter than the outgoing model. The exterior styling keeps some recognizable queues from the old model – specifically the angled C-pillar and rear window – but incorporates some of the styling language from the company’s newer models. The front grille is reminiscent of the Malibu and Cruze, as are the side accent curves.

Inside, the similarities to the Malibu and Cruze are even more evident. The two-tone dash with upswept lines and the large center infotainment screen flanked by vertical vents.

The big news, though, is under the hood. Three turbocharged engine choices are available, starting with a 1.5-liter that makes 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. A 2.0-liter engine that makes 252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque is also available, as is a 1.6-liter turbodiesel that makes 136 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. GM estimates highway fuel economy at 31 mpg for the 1.5, 28 mpg for the 2.0, and 40 mpg for the diesel.

The Equinox will also offer more connectivity including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a 4G LTE hotspot. The usual gamut of safety features will also be available, stuff like forward collision alert, automatic braking, lane assist, and a rear seat reminder.

The Equinox will go on sale in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2017, with launch in 115 global markets later on.
