Kia Soul remains on top of subcompact car sales for September as most cars see decline [News]

Four subcompact cars out of 16 saw increases in sales from August to September, as the Kia Soul remained in the top spot.

The Soul sold the most cars for September in the segment with 11,885, but saw a 3 percent decrease in overall sales from August, which had a total of 12,253 sales. The Nissan Versa came in as the second best selling subcompact car for September, selling 11,553 or a 9.1 percent increase over August’s figures of 10,585, sales figures indicated.

The other competitors that saw increases were the Mitsubishi Mirage, Fiat 500 and the MINI Cooper four door.

Mitsubishi sold 1,756 Mirages in September and saw a 14 percent increase over August’s figures of 1,541. The Fiat 500 had 1,481 sales in September, a 19 percent increase over August’s figures of 1,243 sales. The four-door Cooper saw 842 sales in September, a 0.2 percent increase over August’s figures of 769 sales, sales figures indicated.

The other subcompact cars saw a decrease in sales for September. The biggest drop was the Scion iA/Toyota Yaris iA, which saw almost a 53 percent decrease in sales with 1,192 in September compared to August’s figures of 2,515.

Another drop was the Kia Rio, which saw about 36 percent fewer sales in September at 2,141 compared to August’s 3,325 sales.

The MINI Clubman also saw a dive in sales of about 35 percent, selling 1,004 in September compared to 1,533 in August.

Other cars that saw a double-digit decrease were the Chevrolet Spark with a 24 percent decrease, the Toyota Yaris with a 23 percent decrease, the Fiat 500L with a 21 percent decrease, the Ford Fiesta with a 14.5 percent decrease and the Hyundai Accent with a 10 percent decrease, sales figures indicated.

Some positive trends with sales came when looking at numbers sold in September 2015 and September 2016.

When comparing those two months, several companies saw an increase in sales. Some of the cars that saw a double and even triple digit increase were the Honda Fit at 296 percent, the Hyundai Accent at 106 percent, the Kia Rio at 45 percent and the Mitsubishi Mirage at 30 percent, sales figures indicated.
