What is the most efficient compact crossover out there? The answer is the 2018 Chevy Equinox with the 1.6L turbo-diesel engine (FWD model), according to Chevrolet. The company reports an EPA-certified 39 MPG rating on the highway. This rating is just shy of the 40 MPG estimate that Chevrolet initially made. GM estimate the diesel front-wheel-drive Equinox at 32 MPG in the city.

The little four-cylinder turbo-diesel is rated at 137 hp @ 3,750 rpm and 240 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000 rpm. It’s backed up by a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Equinox competes in a very crowded and competitive compact crossover segment. For comparison, a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid AWD has an EPA rating of 34 MPG city and 30 MPG on the highway (32 MPG combined). The Nissan Rogue Hybrid AWD is rated at 31 MPG city and 34 MPG highway (33 MPG combined).

Turbo diesel engines like highway cruising and can reach fuel efficiency numbers that are greater than the manufacturer and the EPA estimate. We cannot wait to test the Equinox Diesel on our 100-mile MPG loop.

The Equinox diesel is still several months away from arriving at a dealership near you.
