2018 Mazda6 Gets a Turbo Engine: Here’s How it Works [Video]

For this year’s LA Auto Show, Mazda brought along its freshly-redesigned 2018 Mazda6. Among many of its improvements from last year, this new model features a turbocharged 2.5L four-cylinder engine that makes use of a number of technologies to provide advances in both power and economy. While at the show, TFL’s Nathan Adlen had a chance to talk about this new engine with Mazda powertrain engineer Jay Chen. Check out the video above for details on the new heart lurking within the 2018 Mazda6!

2018 Mazda6: A turbocharged heart

For the new powerplant, Mazda has essentially taken the 2.5-liter turbocharged SkyActiv-G engine from the CX-9 crossover. So, how much power does this new turbo engine make? If you run it on premium (93 octane) fuel, you’ll get 250 horsepower and 310 lbs-ft of torque. If you either can’t get or don’t want to use premium fuel, you can run the car on 87 octane. However, if you do, you lose 23 horsepower, for a rating of just 227. Unlike the 2017 Mazda6, if you want the turbocharged engine, your only transmission option is a six-speed automatic.

Jay Chen explains that Mazda went with the 6-speed auto as it gave the most engagement to the driver when compared to a CVT or a dual-clutch system. However, those among us who favor Mazda for its stelwart adherence to the manual gearbox may be disappointed.

Despite no manual transmission, Mazda touts engagement in the 2018 Mazda6

Jay Chen continues to explain other parts of the 2018 Mazda6 that have contributed to increased driver engagement. While it’s no Miata, Mazda has bestowed a number of chassis improvements upon the Mazda6 to bolster its handling and performance prowess. Such improvements include a stiffer platform, a new steering rack, and thicker sheet metal for a safer, more refined, and more dynamic experience.
