The 2018 Detroit Auto Show brought us Hyundai’s latest version of their Veloster Hatchback. More importantly for those interested in hot hatches, Hyundai revealed the 2019 Hyundai Veloster N. This hot hatch is promising big numbers from its 2.0L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine. Namely, 275 horsepower, adaptive dampers, an electronically-controlled limited slip differential and a 6-speed manual transmission. These features pin the Veloster N in the class of cars like the Honda Civic Type-R and the VW Golf R. However, Hyundai have revealed a bit more about this new ‘N’ moniker. It seems it may turn into a new range of sportier vehicles within the Hyundai lineup, dubbed N Sport.

BMW has its M division and on many of their vehicles you can get an M-package. This M-package doesn’t give you all of the performance of the full-on M car, but it does give you some minor aesthetic and performance upgrades to set itself apart from any standard BMW. This is what Hyundai’s N Sport brand will be like, according to Albert Biermann, Hyundai’s Head of Vehicle Test & High Performance Development. Biermann says that these vehicles will come with the same engine, brakes, and suspension tuning as the more vanilla trim levels in Hyundai’s lineup, but will be tweaked “for a more sporty driving experience.” Biermann elaborated further that these vehicles may see improvements like upgraded tires, and other small adjustments.

It would be safe to assume that there will be some visual changes to distinguish these N Sport models. However, Hyundai have not made any mention of which vehicles will be receiving this sporty treatment. Biermann mentioned to Car and Driver that it could be any vehicle in their lineup to get this trim package, so we’ll just have to wait and see which vehicles get it first.
