This Range Rover Sport PHEV had 999 Problems, and It Managed to Climb All of Them

You know, every manufacturer comes up with weird, yet strangely enticing ways to show off their new models. Some commercials are just plain strange. Land Rover, however, sticks to using mountains to show off their cars’ ability. This time, the Range Rover Sport PHEV tackles the “Dragon Challenge” climb to the Heaven’s Gate rock arch in China.

In what Land Rover calls their “fiercest challenge yet”, Le Man winner Ho-Pin Tung drives the Range Rover Sport P400e up the 99-turn “Dragon Road” up Tienamen Mountain. Then, it’s just a 45-degree, 999-step climb to Heaven’s Gate. Narrow and steep with railings on both sides, there wasn’t much room for error. He made it to the top, and now the Range Rover Sport Plug-in Hybrid has made history as the only vehicle to make the climb successfully.

The new Range Rover Sport PHEV will house a 2.0-liter “Ingenium” turbo engine. Working in tandem with an 85-kW electric motor, the car will make nearly 400 horsepower (hence the “P400e” name). It also makes 472 lb-ft. of torque. Land Rover claims an all-electric range of 31 miles for this Range Rover Sport, as well as a 0-60 time of 6.3 seconds. They’ve pegged its top speed at 137 MPH.

This Plug-in Hybrid version of the Range Rover Sport will go on sale this summer. You may not need to climb staircases, or indeed mountainsides, but it’s nice to know the car can do it. No word on pricing yet, but we’ll keep you up to date as Land Rover makes more information available. Check back to TFLcar.com for more updates.
