The most powerful, meanest-looking Shelby model is coming. Here’s what we know so far.

In pursuit of freshening nearly its entire product lineup within the next two years, Ford’s taking a two-pronged approach to its performance models. First, their off-road ambitions: namely, expanding their SUV lineup to include off-road focused models. That includes a new, unnamed small SUV, then there’s the return of a legendary nameplate: the all-new Bronco. The other arm, is their performance models that stick to the asphalt. Ford’s cooking up a couple performance SUVs – the Edge and Explorer ST. Most significant however, especially in terms of raw power, is this: the 2019 Shelby Mustang GT500.

Ford teased the Mustang GT500’s revival during the Detroit Auto Show, right on the heels of another special model – the Mustang Bullitt. However, this is the best look we’ve gotten at the new model so far. Ford flew me out to its development center in Michigan to reveal its two-year product plan as part of their “Ford Uncovered” event. With flared fenders, deep chin spoiler and that signature cobra on the front, this car means some business. Not only that, but the figure teased in the video – 700+ horsepower – also implies the Mustang GT500. Whatever the final figure is, it will be Ford’s most powerful road car to date. Remember, the last GT500 pushed out 662 horsepower and 632 lb-ft of torque from a supercharged 5.8-liter V8.

The teaser video (below) does show an animated version of the Mustang GT500. From that, we can see a few more details – it’s rear spoiler, for one – but still not the entire car. For that, we’ll have to wait a little bit longer.
