Lava From Mount Kilauea Devours an Unsuspecting Mustang (and an R2-D2 mailbox)

Sometimes, you just don’t mess with nature. Case in point, this Ford Mustang being engulfed by a huge lava flow.

Mount Kilauea on the Big Island of Hawaii is famous for its lava flows. It’s the most active volcano in the Hawaiian islands, and has been continuously erupting for the past 35 years. It’s not your average volcano – while we tend to think of a more apocalyptic episode when the words “volcanic” and “eruption” are used, Kilauea is much more subtle. While its lava flows have long served as a tourist attraction, recent events have caused some destruction to communities on the big island.

Take this Ford Mustang, for instance. Raw video footage of Kilauea’s recent volcanic eruption and damaging lava flows – created when a series of earthquakes opened new a new fissure where lava could escape – shows the lava breaching a locked gate. Not only that, but it also slowly creeps across a road toward the abandoned Mustang. Helpless, all we can do is watch while the car is slowly consumed by the molten flow.

Fortunately, no one was nearby when the lava creeped toward the cars, but it did take out an R2-D2 mailbox, as the video’s commenters pointed out. What makes this particularly painful to watch is that it is just so slow. In a way, it’s almost mesmerizing watching Mother Nature enacting a slow, yet fiery demise for this fourth-generation Mustang.

The upside of the lava flow moving so slowly is that people can get out of the way. While the lava is disrupting a local community, folks were able to evacuate in time. There have not been any reports of injuries or deaths related to the eruption. Still, you have to feel for the poor Mustang.
