Kicking off a four-day California road trip

The 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata Summer Road Trip covers many fun-to-drive roads zig and zagging throughout California. Each leg allows the driver(s) to pick the path they want (or need) to drive to get to the next checkpoint. Mazda invited us to join this adventure and have some playtime in their improved, more powerful 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata.

This is a charter member of the San Diego Miata Club. There’s another one of these shirts in the distance. Miata people are… unique.

Being fully aware that this is one of the most disastrous fire seasons throughout California, we are careful to preplan each leg. The point of this trip is to experience the vehicle, so each leg has to be planned based on the most recent news about the fires.

First leg – San Diego to Malibu

Fortunately, San Diego, the kickoff location for this adventure, is good to go for our starting point.

July 29th, 2018 – the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata Summer Road Trip kicks off with a gathering of the San Diego Miata Club. Mazda USA hosted a get together that included dozens of unique Mazda MX-5 Miatas, members of all ages, members of the automotive press and three food trucks.

The mixture of gases was epic.

Lots of unique modifications, lots of tall tales. Lots of loud car alarms and plenty of interaction between Mazda brass and fans. I would say the event is off the a great start.

Tomorrow, we leave San Diego and head to Malibu, CA. I am partnered up with Alex from Alex on Autos. He’s the other video guy in the group and a good friend of Team TFL.

If all goes well, I will have a chance to swing by an amazing charitable organization and deliver some Mazda swag to a fantastic fundraiser – who’s a big Mazda fan too. So, stay tuned for Day 2!
