Welcome back to another episode of TFL’s original game show: Is it Faster than a Fiesta… ST. We pit your cars against our 2018 Ford Fiesta ST in a series of challenges at our test track to find out which is better. This week, our competitor is a long-time viewer of the channel, Chase. Chase has brought his 2014 Ford Fusion with the 1.5L EcoBoost 4-cylinder. This should be an interesting battle.
Spin to win
As always, the wheel of destiny is rigged. This week’s challenges are a rev battle, fuel economy challenge & a straight out drag race.
The Fiesta
Our returning champion, the Fiesta ST, comes with a 1.6L four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that makes around 200 horsepower. The EPA claims it should get 26 in the city and 33 on the highway.
The Fusion
This fusion certainly has an interesting choice of engine. It is a 1.5L four cylinder EcoBoost engine that makes 178 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. It, like the Fiesta is front wheel drive, but powers those front wheels with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The EPA will tell you it should get 23 MPG city and 36 MPG highway. This should be an interesting battle for sure.
What Rev Battle?
This may have been the least enticing rev battle to date. The Fusion sounds like an asthmatic child, while the Fiesta sounds like that, but a little angrier. While neither makes a great noise, the Fiesta just edges out the Fusion, because it has two exhaust pipes.
Sipping Gas
Fuel economy is a strong suit for both of these cars. The Fusion has the smaller engine, but weighs a lot more. But can Tommy keep his foot out of it enough to win? After three laps of the track, the Fiesta managed just 27 MPG. This left the door wide open for Chase and his Fusion. The final verdict? The Fusion put together a screaming fuel economy figure (not such a screaming three laps) of 41.1 MPG, Smashing the Fiesta.
A 3.0L Drag Race
So, it all came down to the drag race. The Fiesta seemed poised to take the win this week. But the Fusion was surprisingly quick off the line.
